Man dies in dump truck accident in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A 47-year-old man dumping trash at a landfill died Thursday when the bed of his truck fell on top of him, deputies said.

Brian Keith Porter, 47, of Sarasota was at the Pinellas County Solid Waste facility in St. Petersburg when the truck bed fell on him about 11:30 a.m., according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

According to investigators, Porter was dumping a load of trash when the bed apparently malfunctioned and became stuck in the open position. As he tried to repair it, the bed dropped and trapped him against the frame. Another worker discovered Porter pinned between the frame of the truck and the fully-loaded bed.

Fire crews said they first tried to inflate air bags to free him. When that did not work, they used a forklift.

Porter was freed after 40 minutes but was pronounced dead at the scene.
