Bicyclist Wilbert Smith of St. Petersburg was hospitalized with serious injuries Monday night after, witnesses told police, he rode into lanes of traffic.
Smith, 57, was eastbound along the north sidewalk of 38th Avenue North, but frequently and randomly rode out into the westbound lanes of traffic, according to St. Petersburg Police.
A 1997 Chevrolet 1500 truck driven by Kamron Van Donkersgoed, 23, was traveling west in the westbound curb lane of 38th Avenue North.
Smith suddenly left the sidewalk and rode into to the Chevrolet's path of travel.
The front of the Chevrolet struck Smith's bicycle, throwing him into the windshield of the vehicle and then to the ground.
Smith was transported to Bayfront Health, where he remains with life threatening injuries.
Police said alcohol was not a factor on the part of Van Donkersgoed, but Smith's blood alcohol content was reported as .32.
No charges are expected.
