St. Petersburg Police Department unveils a new armored vehicle

The new vehicle is for tactical personnel

ST. PETERSBURG - The St. Petersburg Police Department unveiled a newly purchased armored personnel carrier Tuesday.

The Lenco Bearcat (Ballistic Engineered Armored Response Counter Attack Truck) will mainly be used for transporting police tactical personnel to and from hostile situations.

The Bearcat is designed to provide protection from a variety of small arms, explosives and IED threats.  It has 1.5 inch thick steel armored bodywork, plus ballistic glass capable of taking multiple hits.

The vehicle will assist with the rescue, recovery and protection of both officers and civilians found in harm's way during terrorist threats, hostage situations or encounters with armed offenders.

Police say the Bearcat cost more than $200,000 and is based on a Ford F-550 commercial truck.
