Man arrested in fatal hit-and-run on U.S. 19

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - U.S. Highway 19 was shutdown for several hours Saturday night as Pinellas Park police officers investigated a fatal hit-and-run accident.

Officers say 48-year-old Scott Benedict was attempting to cross U.S. 19 with his bicycle near Mainlands Boulevard around 6:00 p.m. when a white Ford Explorer SUV hit him.

Police say that the SUV fled the scene of the accident following the crash.

The injuries Benedict were so severe he died at the scene.

Based on their accident investigation, police arrested 55-year-old Nicholas Kachmar Sunday morning, charging him with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.

Kachmar is being held in the Pinellas County Jai,l awaiting a first court appearance.
