Police: Man shoots soon-to-be father-in-law in Pinellas Park then turns gun on himself

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - One man is dead and another in the hospital after a shooting at the TownPlace Suites hotel in Clearwater on Wednesday night.

According to Pinellas Park Police, Anthony Mcclaney Jr., 29, shot and killed his mother's fiancee, 48-year-old Mitchell Arnold, and then turned the gun on himself.

Police say Mcclaney walked into the suite he's been living in since Dec. 18 with his mother and Arnold, saw them relaxing in bed, and allegedly shot Arnold in the head.

He then reportedly said to his mother, "I'm going to go be with Jesus," before he pulled the gun up to his own head and pulled the trigger.

Mcclaney was taken to the hospital with life-threatening-injuries, but police say he is expected to survive.

The motive remains unknown at this time.

A fire in Largo had recently displaced the family out of their home.

According to Sgt. Adam Geissenberger, Mcclaney does have a history of mental health issues.
