RIVERVIEW, Fla. - Construction is underway for a new hospital in the Tampa Bay area.  St. Joseph's Hospital South in Riverview is expected to provide hundreds of jobs.
People who live near the site are looking forward to the opening. Dolores Sharrock struggles with health issues. She and her husband come to Riverview from Ohio every winter. Sharrock said, "I've had several bouts with cancer and I have a bad heart and been to the doctor's office since I've been here."

That's why Sharrock says she's pleased to hear St. Joseph's Hospital South will be opening it's doors near her place. Sharrock said, "I need to get to a hospital in a hurry. So you know, it just makes me feel better knowing it's there."

The 325,000-square-foot facility sits at Big Bend Road and Simmons Loop Road, in South Hillsborough County. Riverview officials say the entire area stands to benefit. The facility is expected to create 500 jobs. Tanya Doran is the Executive Director of the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce. Doran said, "The local business community will see an impact by just individuals going out for lunch, shopping. I mean this is a huge impact for all of our local businesses, including our home sales here in the area."

Jeremy Adkins says the community clearly has a need for the hospital. His wife will soon give birth to another baby. Adkins said, "Having the hospital there. I think there's going to be some OB's that are going to be in that area. OBGYN's so being able to just be five minutes from the 30 minutes sometimes from the traffic in Brandon, it could be huge."

Since the hospital's groundbreaking, the area has also seen an explosion of medical offices. St. Joseph's Hospital South is scheduled to open in two years.
