Manatee County deputes say a fight between a mother and daughter that started in a car spilled over into a front yard in Bradenton. Now the mother is charged with child abuse.
Aubrey Harris lives up the street from where that car came to a stop on 31st Street West.
"We saw the lights come zooming around the corner. Like seven cop cars," Harris said.
On a typical day, 31st Street West is peaceful and sees little traffic.
But neighbors say Monday the sights and sounds were much different.
"We just heard this scream. It was a scream and it kept going. It made me sick to my stomach," Harris said.
Harris couldn't get close enough to see what was going on, but Chris Halley could. He lives in the cul de sac and came running out of his house to find a 13-year-old girl lying on the ground badly beaten.
Deputies say she had blood covering her face, a bloody nose and a cut above one eye.
Her mother, Kellie Baker, now faces charges
"I was pretty scared just because it's not common to see that many cop cars, especially lights and sirens full blazing down the street," Harris said.
When deputies did get there, they say Baker even tried to get back in her car and drive away before she was arrested. It's not clear what the argument was over, but deputies say the two had been drinking together earlier in the day.
That detail made the situation difficult for Harris, a mother, to believe.
"Drinking, driving, beating up your 13-year-old daughter. That's crazy," said Harris.
Police say the teen had a blood alcohol level of twice the legal limit.
She was placed in her grandmother's custody
