BRADENTON, Fla. - The Manatee County Sheriff's office says a man sexually abused his girlfriend's two daughters for five years and their mother didn't do anything to stop it.
The children are now 18 and 11. An investigation started after the teens came forward.
"Safe to say this is one of the worst cases we've had in recent memory," said Manatee County sheriff's office spokesperson Dave Bristow.
Shawn Ussery faces a long list of charges after investigators say he sexually abused his girlfriend Amy Muse's two daughters inside their Bradenton home.
Muse was also arrested.
Ussery faces 27 charges with bond totaling $2.2 million.
Muse faces three counts, including child abuse. Her bond was set at more than $107,000.
"The mother didn't do anything, that's the problem. She didn't step forward and stop it, she didn't report it. She didn't do anything. She basically let this behavior continue," said Muse.
The details get even more disturbing.
According to the sheriff's office report, Muse was jealous of the attention her children were getting, and she performed a sex act as one of her daughters watched, even saying 'he was mine first.'
The sheriff's office says any child going through this kind of abuse needs to report it.
"They need to let someone know at school, at daycare, someone that they trust. And if they don't. It's just going to continue," said Bristow.
Along with the charges of sexual abuse. The sheriff's office says Ussery smoked meth with the 11-year-old girl as recently as three days ago.
"The whole thing is sick. And the only good thing that came out of this is that they are both in jail right now. And hopefully the children can get back to a fairly normal life," said Bristow.
The 11-year-old is in protective custody, along with a younger sibling, a boy who is not listed as a victim.
The sheriff's office says they are continuing to investigate.
