Sarasota woman arrested, charged for hiring undercover police officer who posed as a hitman

SARASOTA, Fla. - One Sarasota woman wanted two people dead and made moves to ensure her plans were carried out.

Janeene Lea Jones, 49, was arrested Monday and charged with two counts of solicitation to commit murder in the first degree after trying to set up a murder for hire job with an undercover police officer.

According to the Sarasota Police Department report, they started investigating Jones in February.

Police say the stage for the Murder for Hire was the city of North Port, located in southern Sarasota County.

On February 25, the Sarasota Police Department Narcotics Unit, with the help of the North Port Police Department, planned a meeting with Jones.

An undercover cop met with her and discussed the details of the plan.  Jones provided the name of the person she wanted killed, their address and even a picture of the person to the undercover "hitman".

In the plan, Jones detailed exactly how she wanted the person murdered and how she wanted to make sure the "hitman" would clean up the mess as to not leave any evidence behind.

Jones gave the undercover officer money for the job and then made an additional agreement to kill another person.

After the meeting, Jones was arrested on the scene.

The identities of those Jones wanted murdered have not been released by the Sarasota Police Department at this time as the investigation is still ongoing.

If convicted on both charges, Jones could face life in prison.
