SARASOTA, Fla. - One year to the day a crash killed her son, the mother of Andrew Monroe gathered with family and friends at an elementary school soccer field where he played and coached.
"His legacy was that he was kind to every person that he ever met and he taught other people to be kind," said Stacey Monroe, Andrew's mother.
Monroe was 19-year-old when he was killed with three other teens on March 13, 2011. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed the driver of the vehicle they were riding in lost control while speeding. It's thought the vehicle was moving at speeds of nearly 100 miles-per-hour.
19-year-old Sean Leonard of Sarasota was driving eastbound on Wilkinson Road east of Cayo Grande Drive when he lost control of the Chevy Trailblazer. The SUV left the road, crashing into a wall. Along with Monroe and Leonard, 14-year-old Jessica Leonard and 15-year-old Kelly Janis were also killed.
Investigators said all but Janis were wearing their seatbelts.
