VENICE, Fla. - Sarasota County Fire officials and deputies are investigating an overnight fire that took the life of a woman.
The fire broke out just after midnight Saturday in a house on Moss Lane in Venice. The decease's son was inside the home when he started to smell smoke. He soon realized the house was on fire and quickly evacuated the house and called 911.
By the time Sarasota deputies arrived on scene the back bedroom of the house was fully engulfed. The man who was able to escape informed crews that he was unable to get his mother out who was in the back bedroom.
Fire crews found the woman dead in her bed.
The son was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
Initial reports from the investigation determined the fire started in the back bedroom. The State Fire Marshall and forensic investigators have been called out to the scene for further investigation.
