Plane crashes in waters off of Siesta Key

SARASOTA, Fla. - A small plane crashed in the waters off of Siesta Key late Tuesday morning.

The plane landed near the 7900 block of Sanderling Road, about a mile south of Stickney Point Rd. bridge.

Deputies with Sarasota County said the pilot, Earle Swan, 75, of Bradenton and his passenger, Martin Thomas, 51, of Cape Coral had minor injuries.

Deputies said the plane is a replica WWII biplane and experienced engine problems.  

Swan made a mayday call into Sarasota Bradenton International Airport which reported it to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Communications Center.

The FAA has been notified of the incident and a representative from the Flight Standards District Office is heading to the crash scene.
