Gulf rip currents claim life of 6-year-old boy

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. - The body of 6-year-old Lamontae Taylor was found Monday after he was swept away in dangerous rip currents near Longboat Pass over the weekend.

After major searches Saturday and Sunday, Manatee County crews met when the sun came up Monday to decide whether to continue to search for the child.

They believed his body was buried under the water -- and were using sonar to find him.

After 10 a.m., Bradenton Beach Police found his body.

The child went missing while swimming in the water near Longboat Pass and Anna Maria Island Saturday.

According to Longboat Key Fire Chief Paul Dezzi, Lamontea Taylor was swimming with family members and friends near the pass around 6:30 p.m.

The area is reportedly known to have dangerous waters and has warning signs posted.

Dezzi said just as the swimmers started to reach the shore, the boy fell and was sucked under by the current.

Family and friends tried to find the boy but had to call 911 to help.

The U.S. Coast Guard searched for several hours with multiple agencies yesterday but had to suspend the search around 10:40 Saturday night.

His family says they were frustrated with the search so far, dealing with the emotions of not seeing Lamontea Taylor since a current ripped him into the waters on Saturday.

Manatee County search and rescue teams have been looking all over near Longboat Pass and Anna Maria Island where he was last seen with his family.

Family says they were at a cookout when he and a 15-year-old relative had a hard time with the waters.

A family friend told ABC Action News why Lamontea's family has been struggling over the weekend.

"Just reassure her that we're doing all we can. We don't see any signs of anything being done. Not all that they say they're doing. We saw the boats go up and down the road a couple of times," Mazie Blanding said.

Search and rescue teams said it was always an all-out effort.

The current through that pass they say was strong enough to call the place a no-swim zone.
