Man charged with beating dog to death, deputies say crime caught on video

SARASOTA, Fla. - When the owner of a Sarasota automotive shop discovered his 4-year-old Mastiff 'Ashton' missing, he reviewed surveillance video and, to his horror, saw someone he knew killing the animal with a tire iron, according to deputies.

John Olaya, the owner of John's Automotive on Snug Harbor Place arrived at the business on Sunday morning and called deputies when he discovered Ashton missing.

Later in the day, he reviewed the surveillance video and came across the gruesome images of a man beating the dog to death.

Deputies returned and Olaya identified the man in the video as 52-year-old Kevin Koscielniak, an employee who was asked to leave on Saturday after causing a disturbance.

According to a release from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, "the investigation determined that Koscielniak climbed over a barbed wire fence, killed the dog with a tire iron, wrapped the dog in a blanket, cut the fence to Casey's Auto, an adjacent business, dragged the dog onto that property and buried it there."

Koscielniak was located by the Manatee County Sheriff's Office and arrested.

He's charged with one count of Cruelty to Animals Resulting in Death, one count of Improper Disposal of Dead Animals, two counts of Burglary, one count of Tampering with Evidence and one count involving damage to the fence.
