Bomb squad called to Bradenton Village

BRADENTON, Fla. - UPDATE: A robot initiated a controlled detonation of the suspicious device shortly after 2:15 p.m. The investigation continues.

ORIGINAL STORY: A sheriff's bomb squad was called to a Bradenton neighborhood Wednesday afternoon after officers tracked down a man with a suspicious device in a backpack.

Eight homes were evacuated and nearby CSX railroad tracks were shut down as a result.

Police say the suspect, who is homeless, was talking with two other individuals when he produced what appeared to be a pipe bomb.

The individuals spotted some law enforcement officers and reported it.

They tracked him down to a residence.  He was taken into custody and a robot was sent into the home in the 300 block of 12th Avenue West to investigate.
