NOKOMIS, Fla. - A toddler who was run over in her driveway Thursday has died, Sarasota County Sheriff's deputies said.
Investigators say the 20-month-old girl was run over in the 1000 block of Tarpon Court just after 4:30 p.m. The couple at the home had just finished making repairs to their Honda Passport SUV, deputies said, when the girl's mother, Coleen Depasse, got into the car and pulled it forward.
Kate Donnelly was around the corner when it happened.
She said she broke down when she ran up to the scene.
"The little blonde girl was already on the porch and her mama was cradling her. There was blood everywhere, it was just awful. I couldn't stop crying," Donnelly said.
The last time Depasse saw her daughter, she was playing with bubbles on the porch. But deputies said her daughter, Abigail, had wandered into the driveway.
"I just can imagine anybody losing a child that way," Donnelly said.
Rescuers with the Nokomis Fire Department tried to revive the girl. She was transported to Venice Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
"They're going to blame themselves for the rest of their lives . I just hope that they get good counseling and they move past this if they can," Donnelly said.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.
