Woman, April Jennifer Ray, slept while toddlers wandered, Winter Haven police say

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - A Winter Haven woman was fast asleep while three toddlers wandered in and around her home.  After she was awakened, officers found drugs in the home that was "in complete disarray," according to a police statement.

Neighbors, who had been unable to contact April Jennifer Ray, called officers to the home late Thursday afternoon.  When they arrived, they found the front door wide open.  Two of the three toddlers were in the yard alone.

Officers tried to get the attention of anyone inside the home, but were unsuccessful.

They then executed a welfare check and found Ray, 30, asleep in bed.  It took yelling and shaking to wake her up.  When she opened her eyes, she "stood straight up on the bed," according to the release.

Officers found drug paraphernalia and prescription drugs on Ray's bed.

They also found the home in disarray with clothes strewn around, dirty dishes with food piled on the counter and feces on the floor.

"These neighbors helped avoid a much worse scenario," said Police Chief Gary Hester in the statement.

Ray was arrested and charged with three counts of child neglect, one count methamphetamine possession and one count of paraphernalia possession.

The children were turned over to family members.
