High school student arrested in connection to murder of schoolmate

First court appearance

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - A high school student is in jail tonight, after police arrested him in connection to the murder of one of his schoolmates.

Antonio Callaway, 19, appeared before a judge today. He's charged with First Degree Murder, Armed Robbery and Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery.

Investigators say Callaway and someone else robbed Alicia Barnett for marijuana, near Carefree Cove in Winter Haven, last month.  She was reportedly shot multiple times.

Police say Callaway is known to run with gangs and has a criminal history, which includes arrests for Attempted First Degree Murder and Robbery. Both charges were dropped.

Callaway and Barnett both attended New Beginnings High School, in Winter Haven. Tinesha Jennings had a drama class with Barnett.  Jennings said, "I was just talking to her yesterday.  When I heard about (what happened), I was so devastated."

School staff talked to students about the arrest and sent a letter home to their parents. Ashley Wright is the school's principal. Wright said, "We reassure them of the fact that one, we care. Two, their focus here is their education and three, we just go over all the precautions we take everyday to ensure their safety."

Winter Haven police are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to another arrest.

This is not the first time Barnett's family has faced tragedy. Police say her sister was murdered in South Florida within the past year.
