WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - An emergency alert for a suspect on or near Polk State College's Winter Haven campus was posted on the college's social media sites in error Monday morning.
According to a Winter Haven Police spokesperson, the agencies officers were not looking for a suspect in the area, despite social media posts from the college that stated, "Winter Haven PD is searching for suspect on or near campus."
The alert on Twitter and Facebook went on to state, "Those on Winter Haven campus: please lock doors and remain in place."
Polk State College Security Office told ABC Action News by phone that their office does training using the alerts and the alerts accidentally went "live." An official said school security received phone calls about the incident right away and worked to quickly end the alerts and issue the all clear.
Roughly 10 minutes lafter the first post, the emergency situation was dissipated: "ALL CLEAR sounded for Winter Haven campus. Back to business as usual," a post stated.
The alerts resulted from the glitch with the emergency alert system and there was no danger of a suspect search on or near the campus. "There is not threat and was not threat," the security official said.
