Polk Sheriff's Office: Two toddlers die after found face down in pool

LAKELAND, Fla. - Two toddlers died Sunday after falling into in a swimming pool Friday evening, according to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

Judd said both children, 18-month-old Silas Walsh and his 2-year old cousin, Jayvian Watkins, were found floating face down in the pool around 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Judd said the father of the 18-month-old, Jonathan Walsh, was upstairs at the home, 7108 Morning Dove Circle, watching a movie.  Silas' mother, Serena Lugo, was downstairs.

One grandparent was also at home when the two children, cousins, went into the swimming pool area around 6:15 Sunday evening.

A period of time went by -- perhaps 10-15 minutes -- before the parents realized the children were missing.

"And then there was this rush," said Judd.

Deputies and paramedics performed CPR.  The children were taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to Tampa.

He said the door to the swimming pool area was closed, but not latched. The gate to the swimming pool was open, he said.

"This breaks all of our hearts," Judd said. "If it's not bad enough it's occurring, it's occurring on the weekend of Mother's Day where we celebrate with our children and our grandchildren. This is a nightmare of monumental proportions."
