Polk County deputies say 1,000 children could've been victimized in child porn bust; 9 arrested

POLK COUNTY, Fla - A nurse, soldier, church choir director and a computer programmer are among nine arrested in connection with a Polk County child porn bust.

"We haven't finished the forensics, but we think those numbers could be in the thousands," said Sheriff Grady Judd.

The two-day sweep began Tuesday.  Multiple search warrants were served by detectives and nine arrests were made.  In addition, the undercover investigation led detectives to two suspects who also engaged in sexually battering children at a Lakeland home, deputies report.

Those two children, ages 10 and 13, were rescued during the operation.

Larry Bencar of 4222 Simms Road in Lakeland, Joseph Carberg of 5650 New Tampa Highway in Lakeland, Keith Crump of 1880 Crystal Lake Drive #44 in Lakeland, Tavis Bell of 203 Keystone Road in Auburndale, Timothy Peargin of 1880 Crystal Lake Drive #44 in Lakeland, Dennis Swecker of 1510 Hillside Drive in Mulberry, Brian Mitchell or 28920 US Highway 27 in Dundee, Gonzoalo Cardona of 221 Madina Circle in Davenport and Peter Buckley of 9 Forest Drive in Davenport were arrested.

Deputies say Crump, who is a nurse with the Florida Department of Health, admitted along with Bell, to having sex with the two juveniles who were rescued.

The sexual abuse took place at Crump's residence, where he leaves with his partner and fellow arrestee, Peargin, deputies say.

According to Sheriff Judd, Peargin knew of the abuse, but did not contact the authorities.  They say Peargin, who is a choir director and organist at St. David's Episcopal Church in Lakeland, admitted he knew about the child porn for four years.

Crump and Peargin have been partners for six years.

Peargin reportedly told deputies he did not report the abuse because he was giving Crump "one more chance to never do it again."

Deputies estimate that one-third of the victims are younger than five years old, most babies.
