Polk County crash kills woman, injures her daughters

A 73-year-old woman was killed and her two daughters seriously injured when their van drove into the path of a tractor-trailer Wednesday afternoon in Polk County, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Helen Abram Lamar of Plant City died where the crash occurred at U.S. 92 just west of Hibiscus Parkway, an FHP report says.

Laniah, 8, and Jalena Lamar, 7, her adopted daughters, received serious injuries and were taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

The crash occurred about 4 p.m. as Lamar headed east on U.S. 92, the report says.

For unknown reasons, her 2000 Ford Windstar crossed the road's center line and into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer driven by William Chesson Jr., 51, of Falls City, Nebraska.

Chesson tried to move out of the way, but the front of Lamar’s vehicle struck the rear axle of the tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer left the road and hit a mailbox before stopping. Chesson received what FHP described as minor injuries.

The crash closed parts of U.S. 92 for more than two hours.
