A Winter Haven mother was charged Thursday after a detective found her 21-month-old twin daughters alone along on a roadside, police said.
Hilda Rodriguez, 24, is arrested on a charge of child neglect.
A detective found the children about 9:15 a.m. as she drove in the 3000 block of West Lake Hamilton Drive, which has a speed limit of 45 mph according to Winter Haven Police Department. The girls – dirty, but unharmed – were playing in dirt on the roadside.
One of the children walked out into the road toward the detective after she pulled over, police said.
Rodriguez answered the door of a home in front of where the children were found, police said, which was about 100 yards away.
She told the detective she’d put the children in car seats in front of the television while she slept after feeding them that morning, police said. According to police, she told the detective she considered the situation “no big deal.”
The mother did not give police information on how to contact family members, police said, and police had to care for the children for four hours. They are now in custody of the Department of Children and Families.
