Woman digging through trash looking for scrap finds child porn instead

Michael Wright arrested on 15 counts of child porn

LAKELAND, Fla. - A woman looking for scrap metal in what appeared to be curbside trash, instead found a memory card filled with disturbing child pornography.

Investigators said the images involved sex acts with children as young as 18 months old.

"This is the most horrific, nasty, filthy stuff that you can imagine," said Sheriff Grady Judd of Polk County.

Deputies traced the child porn back to 22-year-old Michael Wright of Lakeland. At first he denied knowledge of the images, but they said he eventually confessed.

Wright lived at a home right next to families with several kids.

"I think he needs to be in jail if that's what he's done," said James Bailey, Wright's neighbor. "If he's guilty he needs to go to jail but he also needs his day in court."

Investigators said the woman who found the child porn was digging through what she thought was trash, but turned out to be filled with Wright's belongings.

That's where she found a cell phone memory card.

"She was curious. She wanted to see what was on there," Sheriff Judd said.

She and her friends immediately contacted police when they spotted the images of child porn.

Investigators said disturbing pictures and videos of Wright were also on the memory card, making it easier to trace it back to him.

Judd said they're still investigating, but right now they have no reason to believe the kids in the images are from the local area.

He commends the curious neighbor for doing the right thing.

"People work with us. When they see something, they say something, and as a result we've got a pedophile in the county jail where he belongs," he said.

On Monday, a judge set Wright's bond at $75,000.

The man seen at the house where Wright was arrested Saturday would not answer our questions.
