LAKELAND, Fla. - One person is dead after a late night fire in a Lakeland home Monday.
Lakeland fire officials tell us the first call came into their office around 11:38 Monday night. When they arrived on scene, the home was already 95 percent engulfed in flames.
Thick smoke could be seen coming from the collapsed roof of the house as fire crews walked around the home continuing their investigation at 1410 Trade Winds Avenue.
Tammy Needs, a neighbor, said at least four people and four dogs lived in the single-story home that's on the southeast side of Lakeland.
She said she heard the popping noises from her home and ran out her house to see what it was.
That's when she noticed the flames and she said she heard screaming coming from inside the home.
"The front van was on fire," Needs said.
"The carport was on fire, then the whole house caught on fire. People were running and everything. It all happened within a matter of seconds. It was really chaotic."
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation and multiple agencies are still on the scene.
