Gym will start screening employees every six months after coach arrested for sex with teen

LAKELAND, Fla. - The gymnastics coach arrested for having sex with a 13-year-old girl is not allowed near the gym where he worked for the last year.

Justin Henry is out on bond on a charge of lewd and lascivious conduct. Investigators said a 13-year-old's mother found Henry on Wednesday hiding in the girl's closet.

The teen claimed they had consensual sex.

Although authorities aren't saying where the two met, Elite World Gymnastics in Lakeland is now taking extra precautions to keep their kids safe.

"We were just as shocked as everybody else," said Andrew Muzzarelli, the gym's manager. "It was something that came out of nowhere. It was very disturbing for us."

Muzzarelli said they do background checks on employees every two years, which is why they didn't know about a second arrest back in May.

Polk County deputies charged him with taking three underage girls to the beach in the middle of the night and giving them alcohol.

The gym has changed its policy and will start screening employees every six months.

Muzzarelli said they also plan to sit down and discuss the situation with parents.

"We really want them to know and feel comfort from us. We feel for them. It's not something that we're going to take lightly," he said.
