Students mourn teen killed in Friday's crash while investigators work to pin point cause

Lee Luzon remains in critical condition

LAKE WALES, Fla. - Grief counselors helped students get through the day Monday at Lake Wales High School.

A car accident on Friday killed one of their classmates, and critically injured another.

Omar Ontiveros died from injures suffered while riding in the back seat of the car that ran off the road and hit a tree around 5:30pm Friday.

Lee Luzon was in the front passenger seat and suffered critical injuries. The driver, Keyshawn Johnson was treated and released with minor injures.

All three kids were 17 years old.

"I've never felt how it was to lose a friend," said Simon Pendergast, who is friends with all the kids. "It was unbelievable."

Before classes started on Monday, students at Lake Wales High School held two moments of silence. They also shared memories of Ontiveros and prayed for Luzon.

Dalton Torres is hanging on to the last memory of his friend, Omar, hours before the accident happened.

"I said bye, shook his hand, gave him a hug, and that was it," he said. "It's been a very sad day. Very rough day. Every minute seems like an hour."

Investigators say Johnson was driving down the road when he lost control, and slammed into a tree. His two passengers, Ontiveros and Luzon, bore the brunt of the impact.

Police say some witnesses reported the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when the accident happened.

So far, no charges have been filed.

"For whatever reason, accidents happen," said June Ullman, who is Ontiveros and Johnson's teacher.

Monday morning, she stopped by to visit Johnson -- the driver.

"Keyshawn is, I think, in shock," she said. "I think his heart is broken because he lost one of his dear, dear friends."

The accident remains under investigation.
