State Road 60 reopened after 18-hour shut down for nitric acid spill

LAKE WALES, Fla. - The major highway between Lake Wales, Alturas and Bartow has reopened after being partially shut down for 18 hours Saturday.

State Road 60 was shut down around 5:30 a.m. when a waste transporter noticed damage to a drum containing nitric acid.

Polk County Fire Rescue and third-party environmental cleanup crew responded to the acid spill.

The eastbound lanes of SR-60 were opened to both lanes of traffic for several hours, but all four lane of traffic are open Saturday night.
