Police: Missing children found safe, alert canceled

Tip leads investigators to North Carolina

LAKE WALES, Fla. - A missing child alert for two daughters who vanished with their mother has been canceled after a tip that led investigators to North Carolina.

According to Lake Wales Police, Barbara Brown, 37, and her daughters, Emily Brown, 7, and Kennedy Little, 15, have been involved with an active child custody case with the Florida Department of Children and Families.

According to detectives, DCF obtained a court issued dependency shelter order stating the children were at risk in Brown's custody.

DCF went to make custody with Brown and the girls, but they were not able to find them. When reached by cell phone, Brown allegedly refused to disclose her location and stopped cooperating with the agency.

DCF representatives contacted the police department. A detective responded to the family's last known address in the 300 block of N. Wetmore St. in Lake Wales and found the home no longer occupied. DCF officials said the agency last had contact with the family at the location on July 17.

An anonymous tip led investigators to a home in Duplin County, North Carolina where they were located and found safe.

Detectives are coordinating with Florida and North Carolina DCF to bring the children back to Florida. There's no word yet on what charges, if any, Brown faces.
