LAKE WALES, Fla. - One person is dead and several others were hospitalized after a wrong-way driver collided head on with another vehicle, according to Polk County Sheriff's spokesperson Donna Wood.
A gold 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Michael Sisco Sr., 58, of Lake Wales, was traveling the wrong way in the westbound lanes of State Road 60, according to deputies, around 11:10 p.m. Monday night.
A blue 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser, driven by Felix Rosa, 47, of Mulberry, was traveling in the proper westbound direction when Sisco's vehicle collided nearly head-on with the PT Cruiser, east of Boy Scout Road, in Lake Wales. Witnesses said they saw Sisco's truck driving the wrong way on SR 60 for roughly a mile before the collision, according to Wood.
The PT Cruiser came to rest in the SR-60 median, but the pickup truck continued for several hundred feet before coming to a stop on the north shoulder of the roadway, according to Wood.
Rosa was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital. Several passengers in Rosa's vehicle, all also from Mulberry, were injured.
One passenger, Felix Sierra Rosa, 70, died at the scene. Three other passengers in Rosa'a vehicle were taken to local hospitals with varying injuries.
Anna Rosa, 70, of Mulberry, was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in unknown condition. Lucy Ligget, 83, of Mulberry, was transported to Lake Wales Medical Center, and then LRMC, in unknown condition. William Liggett, 55, of Mulberry, was taken to Lake Wales Medical Center with minor injuries.
Sisco was taken to Lake Wales Medical Center in unknown condition. He was wearing a seatbelt, but it is not known if all those in Rosa's vehicle were restrained.
The highway was reduced to one lane in each direction for several hours during the investigation, Wood said. An investigation continues and impairment appears to be a factor, according to Wood.
