Mom accused of leaving four kids home alone in filthy conditions while she went clubbing

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Polk County mother of four arrested over the weekend for leaving her young kids all alone so she could go party is still sitting in jail Tuesday night.

Investigators said April Flores left her 9-year-old son in charge of his three younger siblings while she went to a Lakeland club.

They said the boy had no idea how to care for the kids. One of them was found with a dirty diaper and a 4-year-old girl had a fever of a 103 degrees. The girl was later found to have bronchitis and another infection.

"Somebody, a grown-up past the age of 18, was supposed to be watching them," said Shawna Mullenberg, who owns the trailer where April and the kids were staying.

Mullenberg said she was out with April that night, but was under the impression the kids were being taken care of.

She wouldn't answer any further questions.

The Sheriff's Office received an anonymous tip about the kids home alone, and when they arrived Saturday night investigators found feces covering the living and bathroom floors.

"It was a mess, and she's out at the clubs. Are you kidding me?" Sheriff Grady Judd said. "You wouldn't leave your dogs or cats in the condition that she left those kids in."

Deputies immediately got The Department of Child and Families involved and jailed Flores on eight charges of child neglect.

She told investigators that it's not the first time, either, according to deputies. She said she left the kids home alone the weekend before as well.

"On top of all of that, mom is pregnant with a fifth child that she can neglect. It just makes me unbelievably angry," Judd said.
