A 14-year-old boy has been charged with helping to steal an SUV with a baby inside last month.
The crime drew wide attention in May after one of the thieves was caught on video dropping the baby on a stranger’s doorstep shortly after the theft. The child was unharmed.
St. Petersburg Police Department identified the teenager using a fingerprint found in the stolen 2013 Toyota Highlander, said Jen Dawkins, a spokeswoman for the agency.
The SUV was stolen the afternoon of May 18 from the Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church at 2580 12th Ave. S., police said. It was found abandoned the same day in a parking lot at 735 22nd Ave. S.
The teenager admitted to his involvement in the theft, Dawkins said, but denied placing the child on a doorstep. Police are still searching for that suspect.
“The video is just grainy and blurry,” Dawkins said. “So we’re keeping the investigation open.”
The teenager is charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle.
