Teacher arrested on child porn charges has stack of past complaints about questionable behavior

Deputies arrested John Kaneski on Friday

PINELLAS COUNTY - The Pinellas County teacher accused of having and sharing child porn was warned in the past about questionable behavior at school.

Tuesday afternoon, the school board released the first part to John Kaneski's personnel file.  The 195-page file revealed a large stack of complaints against Kaneski since he started with the district in 1994.

The complaints range from minor to unsettling.

In one instance, Kaneski received a letter of caution after the district learned he had "inappropriate pictures on his bulletin board."

The principal wrote in the file that it included "several pictures… taken from the rear of students sleeping at their desks."

He said this was not appropriate and may embarrass students.

The file included several complaints from kids or their parents saying Kaneski humiliated them in front of the class.

In one case, a student said she was brought to tears when Kaneski made her kiss a word on the board because she wasn't understanding it.

In another complaint, a parent demanded her child get transferred to a new school after finding what she called inappropriate e-mails between her child and Kaneski.

In several e-mails to the fifth grader, Kaneski calls her "his favorite student."

One from Kaneski reads: "Want to do some college work? I am procrastinating my homework. Write me back and tell me to get busy!"

Administrators told him to stop.

"We just want to reiterate that obviously the community is concerned, we are very concerned," said Lisa Wolf, Spokeswoman for the school board. "Student safety is at the forefront of our concern."

Wolf confirmed that it received a resignation letter from Kaneski on Monday, effective immediately.

The board also informed the state to get his license revoked.

"It is bad stuff, it is egregious stuff," said Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri.

As of now, investigators do not believe any of the child porn found on his home computer involves local kids.

But the case is still active, as we continue to learn more and more about his past.

"The fact that he has had access to kids by being a teacher in the schools is something that is very concerning," he said.

The biggest complaint in Kaneski's work file is from the sheriff's office back in 2005.

A student claimed he sexually assaulted her at school, but shortly later told investigators she made the whole thing up because she didn't like him and wanted to get him in trouble.

Investigators are now giving that case another look.

The second half of his personnel file is expected to be released by the school board on Wednesday.
