DUNEDIN, Fla - Authorities are asking the public to help identify two armed robbers who pistol whipped a Dunedin store clerk after he handed over money and cigarettes to the suspects.
Surveillance footage from inside Munchies, located at 614 Union Street in Dunedin, shows the armed robbery unfold on January 15.
The robbery occurred around 9:35 p.m. In the video, you can see two suspects walk into the store. One of the suspects orders one of the clerks to lay face down on the floor at gunpoint. The clerk can be seen getting on to the ground near the front of the store. Once on the ground, the suspect remained over the clerk and was the lookout at the store's entrance.
This suspect is described as a black male who was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, long black shorts with vertical white stripes on the side, and black and white sneakers.
Detectives say the second suspect then ordered another male store clerk to go behind the counter. This suspect also demanded this store clerk hand over cash and cigarettes. After the clerk gave in to his demands, this suspect hit him over the head with the gun.
The suspect who went behind the counter is described as a black male who was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a "Hollister" logo on the front, dark colored shorts that were baggie, and his nose and mouth were covered with a bandana. He was also carrying a red backpack.
Both suspects then ran from the store.
As the suspects were leaving, they pointed a gun at a customer who was walking into the convenience store.
ABC Action News did try to talk with the clerk who was struck over the head but he was not able to comment. He sustained a small laceration to his head.
The other clerk was too afraid to speak on camera.
Clearwater police believe these suspects are also responsible for a similar armed robbery that occurred a mile away at Dodge's Store at 1194 NE Cleveland Street.
ABC Action News spoke with the female clerk held at gunpoint. Her managers, however, would not let her discuss the issue on camera.
Anyone with any information that might assist in identifying the suspects is asked to contact Detective Jeff Capra of the Robbery/Homicide Unit at 727.582.6200; or to remain anonymous call Crime Stoppers at 800.873.TIPS.
