Mayor Rick Kriseman halted impending promotions Thursday at the St. Petersburg Police Department following a meeting about racial tensions within the agency.
Kriseman said an independent review will be conducted to ensure the integrity of the promotion process.
“Neither misconduct nor baseless allegations will be tolerated by my administration,” Kriseman said.
According to a Tampa Bay Times report , Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin attended a private meeting Tuesday that included about 125 black police officers. The group pointed out racial disparities in their ranks and asked the city to stop the promotion of five officers to allow for an independent investigation.
