ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A home schooled teenager from Pinellas County got quite a surprise Sunday night when singer and host Josh Groban picked her out of the crowd on ABC's live premiere of "Rising Star," a singing contest with a technological twist.
Macy Kate, a 16-year-old from St. Petersburg, had submitted a video to the show via Instagram. She didn't know when she flew to California to be in the studio audience that the show planned to showcase her talent.
"It was insanely surprising," Kate said.
Kate was allowed to practice before her performance, which wrapped up the two-hour long show.
"Rising Star" allows viewers to vote contestants up or down in real time via an app. It also allows the show's celebrity judges to vote.
During her performance, all three celebrity judges voted for Kate to advance, and they were not alone. Kate ended up receiving the highest affirmative vote count of the night.
Over the coming weeks, she will be rehearsing for her next appearance on the nationally-televised show.
"My phone was blowing up last night. I have so much support in Florida," Kate said.
