A scammer posing as a sheriff’s lieutenant is trying to trick people into paying for nonexistent fines over the phone, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
The scammer gives a fake name of Lt. John Roberts and tells victims they have an outstanding warrant for their arrest for failing to report for jury duty. He instructs them to purchase pre-paid debit cards to pay their fine, as much as $800, and tells them to read the card’s information to him over the phone. He threatens to arrest them if they don’t follow his instructions.
The Sheriff’s Office received at least three calls about the scammer over the weekend. All the calls came from the same local number, which is now disconnected.
