Deputies believe K-2 and Spice could be why a son attacked his mother at her Safety Harbor home

SAFETY HARBOR, Fla - A 65-year-old Safety Harbor mother is recovering at the hospital after her son choked and stabbed her Monday afternoon, Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies say.

Deputies say Robert Payne, 22, went inside his parent's house at 1726 Tall Pine Circle in Safety Harbor and then walked into the kitchen where his mother, Victoria Payne, was doing dishes.

For some unknown reason, according to deputies, Robert Payne placed his hands around his mother's neck and began choking her.

Deputies told ABC Action News that Victoria took a plate and broke it on her son's head.  That's when Robert allegedly took a piece of the broken plate and slashed his mother's throat.

Both mother and son only had superficial injuries.

A construction crew working on a neighbor's house saw the two run outside and called 911.  Deputies say there was no knife involved.

Deputies report that Robert  told them he had taken synthetic drugs, mentioning K-2 and Spice. He is also being treated at a local hospital.

Investigators are still looking into this case and say charges are forthcoming
