Pinellas students may qualify for free dental care at Department of Health Back to School event

For first time patients only

"There can be tremendous impacts for not doing routine dental care," said Christina Vongsyprasom, Dental Service Manager for the Department of Health in Pinellas County.

Matthew Pierce is entering his senior year in high school with a fresh dental checkup. He's relaxed in the chair as the work is done. His mom Sue has been bringing him and his twin brother Nicholas to the Pinellas County Department of Health for dental care since the third grade.

"It's very important to take care of their teeth.  And especially with school starting, you got the school pictures, and it just gives them a whole lot of confidence starting school with clean teeth and they pretty smiles," explained Sue Pierce.

This Friday, the Pinellas Department of Health is hosting a free Back to School Dental Day for first time patients ages four to 18.

Dr. Stacey Golden is a Senior Dentist with the county and says the exams are routine in nature, but can reveal more underlying issues.

"What we are offering is a free exam and x-rays.  And if we notice that a child also has an infection, we will also address that situation," Golden said.

The event starts at 8:00 a.m. and is first come, first served.  The downtown St. Pete Health Department in south county will be open as well as the new mid-county facility on Ulmerton Rd.
After an overwhelming response to last years Back to School Dental Day, a third location has been added in Clearwater to help serve north Pinellas County students.

"Hopefully people can get a little bit closer to their homes and it'll decrease the wait time a little bit," Vongsyprasom said.
Sue Pierce knows dental care can pay dividends for the students.

"You know, if you're going to buy them new clothes for the beginning of school, why not get them a nice new smile," she said.

The event will be held at the three locations below.
