Pinellas County - The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is investigating an attack in the High Point area near Largo. According to initial reports a woman was walking home from a friend's house when she was assaulted by what may have been two men on Avalon Ave. (south of Roosevelt and west of 58th St.).
The woman received cuts to her back but managed to get to a home where the person inside called 9-1-1. The woman was then airlifted to a local hospital where she is expected to be fine.
We spoke to her roommate who told us what she apparently told him. On her way home from her friend's house, just a couple of blocks from her place, she was attacked by two men from behind. She fell down to the ground into the fetal position as her back was being slashed. The Sheriff's Office says they have no evidence at this time, that suggests that she was attacked with a knife but they do say she had cuts to her back.
Speaking to residents in the area, they say they are not surprised that someone was attacked. One woman, who was pushing a stroller with her daughter in it, and who did not want to be identified, told us she was chased by two men one day and had to hide in the bushes to get away from them. She also told us she now carries a taser.
Another woman we spoke to who only identified herself as Kerri, said the High Point area is just a bad place to live, with drug dealers and garbage littering the streets. After hearing someone was attacked she responded, "That's really scary because I'm a single mother." She then paused, reflecting on what she just learned, "Ya, scary."
The Sheriff's Office says they are still in the early stages of their investigation and right now they do not have anyone in custody or have any motive for the attack. So they are asking anyone who may have any information to give them a call.
