Clearwater man stabbed while confronting burglars; police looking for two suspects

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Clearwater police say a man was stabbed Wednesday after confronting two burglars in his apartment.

The stabbing occurred about 4 p.m. at the Turnbury Apartments at 25350 U.S. 19 N., according to Clearwater Police Department.

The man was released from Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg after being treated.

"Got stabbed with my own kitchen knife too, my own steak knife," said the man, who asked ABC Action News not to reveal his identity.

The 34-year-old man explained he moved into the apartment a week ago and decided to quickly stop at home after work.

"I was just rushing home to take a shower, pick my kids up and go to church and catch the 7 o'clock mass," he said.

His children happened to not be home, but out with their mother.

He did not suspect anything was amiss at his apartment because there appeared to be no forced entry. However, when he got inside, one of the burglars was standing by the door and stabbed him. The other suspect was in a back room.

"I fell to my knees. Luckily, there was clothes right there. All my clothes were drenched with blood," he added.

He know has bandages over his wound.

"It's sore. It feels like a hot bee sting," he said.

The knife wound missed his spleen by just a hair.

All that was taken from the apartment was a gun, he said. He added wires to his stereo were also cut but his electronics were not taken.

Rodrigo Betancourt, the man's next door neighbor, said he was home at the time the crime occurred.

"No idea it was going on," Betancourt said.

Other residents ABC Action News spoke to said the apartment complex is very safe and nothing like this has happened in the past.

The victim said he plans to move immediately.

"I don't feel safe," he said.

The victim said the suspects appeared to be in their late teens or early 20s. The one who stabbed him is described as having a thin build and standing 5-foot-9. He wore blue jeans, a white shirt and gloves.
