Search underway in Central Florida for missing Zephyrhills pilot

An aircraft that was supposed to land in Zephyrhills this past weekend is missing.
Dunnellon Airport managers said the pilot, Theodore Weiss, took off there Saturday. Authorities are searching for the aircraft in the Withlacoochee State Forest, which is more than 157,000 acres of mostly dense woods.
The experimental plane is white with a green stripe and “N229P” on the tail section.
The aircraft is based in Zephyrhills. When Weiss did not arrive from Dunnellon, friends noticed his car and empty hangar and notified authorities.
Flying conditions were said to be good when Weiss departed Dunnellon. He did not file a flight plan, according to reports.
Don McNeil, a high school friend of Weiss, traveled to Zephyrhills on Tuesday to learn more about the situation.
"I'm very concerned, that's why I'm here today,” he said. "The more you talk about it, the more serious it becomes, and that's not good."
Airport officials said a flight plan wasn't required for Weiss' short trip to Marion County.
