Flood Warning issued July 27 at 9:03PM EDT expiring July 30 at 2:00PM EDT in effect for: Pasco
Pasco County commissioners announced Thursday a new multi-sport complex that will be built near Interstate 75 and S.R. 56 and could open as early as 2015.
The $20 million Cypress Creek Ice and Sports Complex and will span 13 acres. The 150,500-square foot, two-story building will house three ice rinks, basketball courts and an indoor track.
Other amenities include locker rooms, a snack bar, video games, laundry room and a conference room.
"I am just excited that the new rink is finally coming," said Madison Novotny.
The 12-year-old is an avid hockey player and currently travels from her home in Wesley Chapel to practice in Brandon. It's about a 40 minute drive and her parents have been taking her back and forth for the past four years.
With a rink just blocks away, Novotny will get more time on the ice.
"That's pretty nice," Novotny said.
Novotny was among about 50 people who attended a news conference Thursday afternoon regarding the new sports complex. The conference drew big names like Dave Andreychuk, a former Tampa Bay Lightning player who was on the team when it won the Stanley Cup.
"This helps the whole region, and that is the exciting part," said Pasco County Commission Chairman Jack Moriano. "It is going to be great for our kids, great for business."
Not only will the complex employ dozens of people, construction will also bring jobs to the area.
"There are going to be many hundreds of construction jobs throughout the next couple of years working on this project," said Florida Senator Wilton Simpson (R).
Families who live in the area told ABC Action News they are excited about the new complex and look forward to taking their children there.
"We are all excited for something new," said Ashley Wolaver.
Wolaver has three children but none play hockey, yet.
"I'm sure this will spring up some interest in it though," she said.
The sports complex will also offer the following activities:
• Ice skating lessons
• Public skating
• Youth teams and tournaments
• Adult leagues and tournaments
• Professional development
• Off-ice skills training
• Soccer camps
• Lacrosse practice
• Fitness clinics
• Sports seminars
• Exhibition games
• Party accommodations
