HOLIDAY, Fla. - A Holiday woman was arrested for leaving her toddler in her SUV to go shopping Monday, just after noon, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.
The trapped 2-year-old boy could be heard by passerbys crying and screaming inside of the hot vehicle as temperatures inside the vehicle reached between 95 to 100 degrees.
Officials responded to the parking lot at the Publix Supermarket, located on 5127 U.S. Hwy 19 in New Port Richey, following reports of child being locked in a vehicle with the windows up.
When the child's mother, 26-year-old Brittany Dawn Nicely returned to her vehicle, the child could be heard yelling mommy as the deputy questioned her.
Nicely told the deputy that she left the child in her SUV because he had just fallen asleep and she didn't want to wake him up.
She said she just went inside the store, 75 meters away, to get groceries and a sandwich. The deputy noticed that a six-pack of Smirnoff Blueberry & Lemonade Malt beverages was among several grocery items Nicely had in her cart.
The deputy asked her to open the car and check on the child. The toddler was extremely warm and sweating.
Surveillance video from the supermarket showed that Nicely walked inside the store and didn't leave until 20 minutes later.
The deputy noted that the child appeared to have defecated during his mother's trip and had to sit and wait until she returned.
Nicely was charged with Child Neglect and arrested.
The New Port Richey Fire Department responded to attend to the child.
