Troopers with Florida Highway Patrol said a DUI suspect crashed into another car at a high rate of speed around 3:17 a.m. Monday morning, killing the driver of another car.
FHP said a car driven by Ryan Brosnan, 21, of Port Richey, was northbound on US 19. Based on preliminary information, troopers estimate Brosnan was traveling at speeds over 100 mph.
Brosnan slammed into the rear of a car being driven by Courtney Kreckel, 38, of Port Richey. The impact caused Kreckel's car to travel across the median into the southbound lanes of US 19 and catch fire.
Kreckel was pulled from the car and transported to Trinity Medical Center where she died a short time later.
US 19 in the area of Moog Road was closed for hours as law enforcement officers investigated. The roadway reopened around 9:45 a.m.
Brosnan was arrested for possession of marijuana. He faces additional charges pending a full investigation and toxicology results.
