A 41-year-old man died Tuesday after a deputy shot him during an arrest, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
Jerry Dwight Brown, 41, of Lakeland, was shot while deputies tried to arrest him on a charge of selling prescription pills.
The shooting occurred about 4:30 p.m. outside Big Ben Tires at 4128 Gall Blvd. in Zephyrhills, deputies said.
Deputies say an extensive narcotics investigation led them to the tire repair shop off Highway 301. Investigators believe Brown was selling prescription drugs out of the business.
"The prescription pill epidemic is still going on. We're still seeing families destroyed. This violent individual was trying to destroy more families, and we were here trying to stop him tonight," said Sheriff Chris Nocco.
The Sheriff’s Office has not released a detailed account of the shooting, including why the deputy opened fire.
Others who work at the tire shop are being questioned, but investigators have not said if they think anyone else was involved in Brown's alleged drug operation.
According to the state Department of Corrections, Brown has previous convictions for robbery and grand theft.
