NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - A 21-year-old woman is recovering from stab wounds to her shoulder and abdomen following a road rage incident in New Port Richey Wednesday night.
Ariana Gaton, 19, of 29443 Allegro Drive, Wesley Chapel, is now facing aggravated battery charges.
Pasco County deputies say Gaton got into an argument with Ariella Vanko at the corner of Starkey Road and River Crossing Drive around 7 p.m.
Gaton reportedly got out of her car, went to the Vanko's window and began shouting at her.
Deputies say Gaton hit the Vanko's car and then threw a CD at her.
According to an arrest affidavit, Vanko says she was in fear and hit Gaton in the face.
At that point, deputies say Gaton walked back to her car. That is when the other Vanko got out of her car.
Vanko reportedly told deputies Gaton attacked her and they fought. Vanko says she did not realize she had been stabbed until Gaton showed her the knife.
Gaton, however, told deputies she acted in self-defense.
Gaton told deputies she walked back to her car to get her phone. However, when she saw Vanko had gotten out of her car and was walking over to her, she decided to arm herself with a knife she keeps by the driver's seat.
Gaton says Vanko began to strike her again so she stabbed Vanko several times.
Vanko is still recovering at Bayonet Point Hospital. Her injuries are described as serious but not life threatening.
Gaton has bonded out of jail.
Gaton and Vanko both declined to comment to ABC Action News.
