Tarpon Springs PD: 19-year-old male shot while trying to disarm gunman

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - Two teenagers were walking on a Tarpon Springs sidewalk when they were held up at gunpoint, according to detectives.

It happened Saturday shortly after 9:30 p.m. in the area of 16 S. Walton Avenue.

Tarpon Springs Police Department investigators say a 19-year-old male and a 16-year-old female encountered an unknown man who busted out of an unlit, wooded area brandishing a gun.

He reportedly forced the couple to move off the sidewalk, then the 19-year-old tried to disarm the suspect.  Detectives say he was unsuccessful, because the suspect then shot the male victim in the left side of his upper body during the struggle.

According to reports, the suspect then fled on food heading east through the wooded area he came from.

Someone called 911, and Tarpon Springs police officers responded to the scene.

The 19-year-old victim was flown to Bayfront Medical Center to be treated for his injuries.

Officers and K-9 units searched the area, but did not locate a suspect.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his early 30s, approximately 5-feet 3-inches to 5-feet 5-inches tall, 130 to 150 pounds, last seen wearing a medium gray or blue hooded sweatshirt.
