Police: Tarpon Springs High School student caught carrying concealed handgun

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - A Tarpon Springs High School student was arrested Monday when he was caught carrying a concealed handgun on campus, according to a police statement.

A school resource officer received an anonymous tip around 8 a.m. that a student had a firearm.

The officer removed the student from class and took him to his office.  The student admitted to having the gun and said he was carrying it for self-protection due to an ongoing problem he was having with several other students off-campus.

The officer took the gun, a .32 caliber Berretta, which had three rounds in the clip but no round in the chamber.

The student said he found the gun in some bushes Off Meres Blvd a few days earlier.

The officer inspected the gun and discovered the serial number had been filed down. The student seemed unaware of this, according to the statement.

The student was arrested and taken to the county Juvenile Detention Center.  He is charged with possessing a firearm on school grounds and carrying a concealed firearm. Both are felony charges.
