Speeding motorcyclist dies in Palm Harbor crash after fleeing deputy, authorities say

PALM HARBOR, Fla. - Authorities are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash in Palm Harbor Sunday night.

The crash happened in front of Sutherland Elementary at Belcher and Grove Boulevard at 11:15 p.m.

Deputies said Daniel Lavoy Akins was seen speeding on his motorcycle, weaving in and out of traffic in Oldsmar, heading west on US 19.

Akins fled from a deputy who tried to stop him for speeding. The deputy didn't pursue the motorcycle.

Akins was last seen traveling north on Belcher Road around Nebraska Avenue at a high rate of speed.

Investigators said that after he passed Alderman Road, he struggled to negotiate a curve in the road and crashed.

The crash was heard by two people, who called for help.

Akins was taken to Bayfront Medical Center and died after midnight from his injuries.

Officials said the crash may be alcohol related. An autopsy has been scheduled.
